Parallel structures: What are they?

Las estructuras paralelas buscan mantener una misma gramática en las ideas que transmite una oración.

Puedes decir:

• I like to bike, swim, and ride. (Correcto)
• I like to bike, swimming, and ride. (Incorrecto)

En la primera oración los tres verbos usan el infinitivo, mientras que en la segunda oración, uno de los verbos utiliza el gerundio.

Cuándo utilizar estructuras paralelas

Las estructuras paralelas transmiten profesionalismo y formalismo, por eso son comúnmente utilizadas en medios digitales o discursos importantes.

Tienes que utilizar esta estructura cuando:

• Los elementos son unidos por “and”, “but” y “or”.
• Los elementos son listados en una secuencia.
• Los elementos son comparados.
• Los elementos son unidos por expresiones como “either/or”, “neither/nor”, “both/and” o “not only/but”.

Ejemplos de estructuras paralelas:

• He likes reading, speaking, and writing in English.
• The President traveled to several cities meeting voters, giving speeches, and asking for campaign funds.
• The team emphasized collective effort, mutual support, and responsibility.
• The cat crawled across the living room, jumped over the sofa, and passed between the tables.
